Generously supported by Upstock.App (thanks for getting behind us guys!)

We arrive in Whitby blowing a gale. It feels like Wellington.

We've come to chat with Vicky Ha who is the first person to say yes to coming on our podcast.

We've arrived with an idea, a new podcast recording thing, mics, cameras, phones and notepads with a vague plan of attack.

Up til this minute we've never recorded a podcast with a person outside of our families so we're excited. We're a little nervous but we know Vicky is the kind of person who will carry the convo no matter what's going on. She won't feel awkward, she'll be a champ.

And she is. She and her partner Cedric welcome us in, coffee is set straight away and Cedric is serious about his coffee. The stovetop goes on and we know we're in good hands.

Vicky fires up the cast iron - she hits Daniel up for the best way to cook bacon. Incase you're new here - Daniel makes the bacon. At one point he grew the pigs that make the bacon but now he just makes the bacon.

We set up our gear on the dining table in a light filled living space, pretty sure it's all good to go.

Vicky brings towering BLTs to the table, chewing and mouth full mumbling we start our first podcast and learn all about a kid who didn't fit in to a culture that didn't appreciate her windsurfing dreams and was sent to boarding school in Dunedin from Hong Kong (HONG KONG TO DUNEDIN can you imagine?!) somehow she ended up in Welly with a bakfiets and an empire.

Some themes of this episode, food science, purpose, racism, surviving because you're too stubborn not too. Not being afraid to find your sweet spot and stay there. Her quest for gold status in the Koru lounge and admiration of loyalty programs.

An hour later, we're podcasters 🎙️
